How much can I bring back from a cruise duty-free?
Most travelers returning to the US get an $800 personal exemption per person. If your cruise visited the US Virgin Islands, the exemption rises to $1,600 per person (with at least $800 of it from USVI purchases).
Do children get a duty-free exemption too?
Yes. Every family member — including infants — gets their own exemption, and families traveling together can combine them on a joint declaration. A family of four typically has $3,200 of combined allowance.
What happens if I go over the duty-free limit?
The next $1,000 over your exemption is typically charged a flat 3% duty. Beyond that, item-specific rates apply. You declare on arrival and pay at inspection — cards are accepted at most cruise terminals.
How much alcohol can I bring back from a cruise?
Generally 1 liter per adult duty-free (2 liters if one was produced in a Caribbean Basin country, up to 5 liters for USVI itineraries with restrictions). State rules also apply at your arrival port.
